New Shoes

A woman came into our Aging and Disability Resource Center seeking information on selecting health insurance. After listening to her situation, an information counselor discovered she was living on an income of $900 a month.  She was unaware of many programs and benefits available to her. The additional benefits would result in the woman saving $200 each month. After the counselor helped her apply for these programs, the woman asked, "Can I spend some of this money on myself? I haven't had new shoes in many years. I would be so happy to have something more comfortable for all the walking I do. Can I spend some of this on new shoes?" To her delight, our counselor replied, "Of course, it's your money."
