Our Goals

  • Through culturally sensitive outreach, information and collaboration, older adults and individuals with disabilities will be empowered to make informed choices for today and tomorrow.
AOASCC’s reach extends to thousands of older adults, individuals with disabilities and caregivers in the greater New Haven and lower valley areas of Connecticut each year.  The number of programs and the different groups reached through our services are more than can fit in a paragraph.  We are constantly looking for opportunities to better serve the individuals who come to us for assistance.  As advocates for independence, our staff are dedicated to helping individuals remain safely at home and to stay active and engaged in their communities.
  • Our society’s conception of older adults and individuals with disabilities will evolve to encompass the full range represented by those populations.
AOASCC is also committed to seeing the society’s conception of older adults to evolve to encompass the full range represented by those populations.  To this end, AOASCC offers opportunities to volunteer and an annual art show.  Now these efforts are being focused as a way to impact our advocacy through fighting ageism and its negative impact on society, individual health and welfare.

Our History

In 1965 congress passed the Older Americans Act (OAA) in response to concern by policymakers about a lack of community social services for older persons. Although older individuals may receive services under many other Federal programs, today the OAA is considered to be the major vehicle for the organization and delivery of social and nutrition services to this group and their caregivers.

In 1973 Area Agencies on Aging (AAAs) were established under the OAA.  AAA’s serve as the conduit for OAA funds to be distributed, providing in-home and community-based long-term care services for older adults 60 and over.

AOASCC was the first AAA established in Connecticut and began with just three staff in 1974. In 40 years, we have grown to a 150 staff agency that now serves older adults, individuals with disabilities and caregivers. While maintaining our strong commitment to the mission of the Older Americans Act, we are constantly looking for new opportunities to serve the individuals who come to us for assistance. The reach of our programs has grown to include a wide-range of services and information to help individuals remain safely at home and opportunities for older adults to stay active and engaged in their communities.

Our Services

AOASCC provides support to live at home. We help those looking for services and information that will help them continue to live safely at home. We will be your guide through the often confusing maze of available benefit programs, insurance options and community services.

AOASCC provides support to those caring for their loved ones. We know caring for loved ones can be stressful. We’re here to provide support, services and information that will help your loved one continue to live safely at home. We also can offer respite breaks and classes to help you be the best caregivers you can be.

AOASCC provides opportunities for staying active & healthy. The best way to stay healthy is to be physically active and socially involved. We provide exercise and health classes designed to help maintain an independent lifestyle as one ages. We also give you the chance to give back by sharing your time, skills, and experiences. Not only will the recipients of your time benefit, but volunteers report better health and a better outlook on life.

AOASCC provides community services. We advocate for aging and disability issues. We develop a plan on a regular basis to address how to meet the needs of older adults in south central Connecticut. Based on this plan, we partner with other non-profits to ensure our community has an array of services to support individuals' choices. A full range of services are funded including health and wellness programs, social support, and services that sustain independent living.
